Connectors SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS connector

  • In development
  • Automation built
  • SOLIDWORKS API
  • Windows

Our first connector, and the one that already does real work. Our SOLIDWORKS add-in plans parts, reads and measures the open model, and builds features, with an approval card inside SOLIDWORKS for every change. The online connector that brings it to Claude and Codex is in development.

  • Your AI app
  • CADMCP.AI server
  • Agent on your PC
  • Our add-in in SOLIDWORKS
  • Approve and Run

What exists today. The add-in and everything described in sections 01 to 04 are built and tested against real SOLIDWORKS on our own computers. The online connector and the agent are being built, so you cannot connect to it yet.

01 / What your AI app can reach

58 tools. None of them changes a model on its own.

The add-in gives an AI app a fixed list of tools. The online connector is designed to pass this same list through the agent.

17 TOOLS

Planning, with no model open

Understand a request, plan a part or a feature program, analyse a spur gear, offer design options, ask a clarifying question and screen a commercial job.

20 TOOLS

Read the open model

Inspect the model, configurations, custom properties, material, bodies, equations, mates, sketch entities and flat patterns. Measure, including in a chosen coordinate system.

11 TOOLS

Selection and camera

Select faces, edges, features and components, take a screenshot, set the view, zoom to fit and switch documents. No geometry changes.

8 TOOLS

Ask for a change

Request a model change, a feature program, save as, close, rebuild, a configuration switch or opening a file. Each one only puts a request in front of a person.

1 TOOL

Plan an export

Checks a STEP, IGES or Parasolid export and its options and returns the exact request. It writes nothing itself.

1 TOOL

Request status

Shows the state of waiting requests without their text.

02 / The approval card

The AI proposes. You approve in SOLIDWORKS.

When the AI wants to change your model, the request appears on the approval queue in our add-in’s task pane inside SOLIDWORKS, with the exact request and its target.

  • You choose Approve and Run or Reject. Nothing else can approve: not the AI, not the chat, not the connector.
  • An approval creates a grant that works once, lasts 60 seconds and is tied to that request, that user and that document.
  • A request is bound to the document it was made for. If the file changes on disk, or a different document is active, it is refused.
  • Requests expire on their own. Saving over an existing file and closing with unsaved changes cannot be requested at all.
  • Change requests stay off until an administrator turns them on.

APPROVAL CARDILLUSTRATION

Create a flange 160 mm OD x 16 mm thick with a 60 mm bore and 8 x 12 mm bolt holes on a 125 mm bolt circle. Save it as Eight_Hole_Flange.

  • new part
  • base extrude
  • bore cut
  • 8 bolt-circle holes
  • person must approve

Approve and RunReject

A drawing of the idea, not a screenshot. The real card is in the SOLIDWORKS task pane.
03 / What it builds

From a sentence to a native part

Results are ordinary SOLIDWORKS documents with an ordinary feature tree that you can edit by hand.

FEATURE PROGRAMS

Many features, one approval

The AI can write a feature program: a checked list of operations such as revolve, helical thread, cut, pattern and sweep. The spark plug in our showcase is one program of seven operations.

GENERATORS

Gears from gear data

A generator computes an involute spur-gear profile from its gear data and checks undercut, backlash and the material left around the bore before it builds the gear.

EXPORTS

STEP, IGES, Parasolid, BOM

Exports of the active document go into a governed exports folder and never over an existing file. Assemblies can export a structured bill of materials.

04 / Under the hood

Security in the add-in itself

  • The add-in accepts calls only through a local channel that your own Windows account can open, and each call carries a secret protected by Windows for your user.
  • Old and repeated messages are rejected. Calls are rate-limited and size-limited.
  • An audit log on your computer records fingerprints (hashes) and state changes, never your raw requests.
  • No tool can run arbitrary SOLIDWORKS commands, and no tool changes a model directly.

The online connector adds the agent in front of this, with its own checks: signed requests, an allow-list of tools and a pause switch. Security and trust

FOR PAID CLIENT WORK

A scope policy that can say no

When the add-in is used for paid client work, each job description can be screened first. Simple work can go ahead under supervision; anything else goes to a person or is refused.

  • Simple prismatic parts, fixtures and jigs
  • Controlled edits to existing parts
  • Neutral exports, draft drawings and BOMs for human review
  • Production-ready or unreviewed packages
  • Safety-critical, structural, pressure, lifting, medical, aerospace and vehicle parts
  • Weapons and export-controlled work
05 / What you will need

Requirements

  • A Windows PC with SOLIDWORKS installed and licensed
  • Your own Claude plan (Free, Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or OpenAI Codex
  • A CADMCP.AI account and plan
  • The CADMCP.AI installer, which adds the agent and our SOLIDWORKS add-in

HOW WE TEST IT

Measured against real SOLIDWORKS

Features are tested offline and then in live runs against real SOLIDWORKS before we call them ready. Drawings and bills of materials are drafts for a person to check and finish.
